I see some of the members have problems posting pictures, but I use the normal HTML format with out problems.
These are a few interesting coins that came my way in the past month …
The first coin is a Silver Piece of Eight (Eight Reale) from the Mexico mint from the period of Philip II (1556-1598) from the wreck of the Santiago that was lost between Mozambique and Madagascar in 1585 while the Spanish empire was at the zenith of its global domination.
This relatively obscure wreck sank on a reef at night due to pilot error, following which the captain and crew absconded with the one useable lifeboat, leaving some 400 or more passengers to perish on the wreck.
Pre-Victorian coins of the old British Colonies are currently very much in demand internationally. Especially the silver coins of the old romantised sea-faring countries. With a 91.75% silver content and a huge coin (31 mm diameter), this Silver One Rupee dates 1835 from the British East India Company (King William IIII) is a beauty!
These two coins, from a Namibian (Skeleton Coast) shipwreck whose name has been lost in time after more two centauries, are a Doit dated 1790 and a Half Doit dated 1788. Both are from the old Dutch province of Utrecht with the VOC sign (Dutch East India Compony) on the obverse of both coins.
Regards
Pierre
