For those who are not familiar with the history of the Roman Empire I was told that a silver denari was approximately 1 day's pay for a Roman soldier.
Since in those days the life expectancy of a Roman legionaire was about 26 years of age and banks did not exist.........Guess what when they got paid (the moneyer or whatever they were called actually went along with the troop and minted coins along the way to meet the payroll).
The soldiers would bury their pay before going off to battle. If they didn't live the hoard of coins were lost until a detectorist comes along to find them. This explains why so many of these hoards keep popping up.
Sorry for the long winded post and not sure if this is 100% accurate but this is how it was explained to me by an old time dealer in Roman coins.
